In development

all/backed is deep in development; what it will do and what it will cost is already settled. The beta launch will be announced right here — and if you'd like in early, just drop us a line.

Isn't a ZIP good enough?

// backup != copy

Fair question: zipping a folder and dragging it onto an external drive works without any tool. The difference only shows the moment you need something back — and that moment is exactly what a backup is for.

Versions
Manual copy / ZIPOne copy; the new one overwrites the old. Last week's state is gone.
all/backed.Every run is its own snapshot — incremental, and every version stays restorable.
Storage
Manual copy / ZIPEvery copy you keep takes up its full size.
all/backed.Deduplication: only changed blocks are stored again — ten snapshots don't cost ten times the space.
Encryption
Manual copy / ZIPUsually unencrypted: whoever plugs in the drive reads everything.
all/backed.AES-256, encrypted on your device before anything is written. The key stays with you.
Integrity
Manual copy / ZIPWhether the archive actually opens only becomes clear in an emergency.
all/backed.Checksums and spot-check restores after every run — errors surface immediately, not when it matters most.
Restoring
Manual copy / ZIPUnpack everything and search by hand.
all/backed.Pull individual files and folders from any version, on demand.
Routine
Manual copy / ZIPOnly works as long as you remember to do it. Every time.
all/backed.Saved tasks: same source, same destination, one click. Fully automatic on a schedule with Pro.

// To be fair: a manual copy beats no backup at all. all/backed just turns the same effort into one you can rely on.

Why the browser, of all places?

// no installer, no admin rights, no blind trust

Nothing to install

Extension from the store, done — no installer, no admin rights. That means all/backed also runs on managed work machines and on ChromeOS, where classic backup software never even starts.

The sandbox works for you

Classic backup tools demand full-disk access. all/backed sees exactly the folders you grant it — not one more. That's enforced by the browser's permission model, not merely by our promise.

One engine, one open format

The extension and the companion app (Pro) write the same documented repository format. Free backups stay valid when you upgrade — and your data is never stuck in a proprietary container.

An honest division of labor

No browser can — or should — back up system files and bootable clones, and we don't claim otherwise. That's what the Pro companion app is for: it handles the system level, controlled from the same interface.

Features

// planned for version 1.0

Backup in the browser

Pick a folder, pick a destination, back up: spontaneous local backups to external drives straight from the extension — no desktop install, no account.

Zero-knowledge encryption

AES-256, encrypted on your device before a single byte leaves it. The keys stay with you — the same principle as our secrets tool.

Versioning & deduplication

Incremental backups with block-based deduplication: every snapshot stays restorable without your storage footprint exploding.

Schedules & automation

Hourly, daily, or whenever the drive is plugged in: Pro backups run automatically on schedule — with a notification if something goes wrong.

Verified restores

A backup only counts once the restore works: integrity checks after every run and file-level recovery from any version.

SafetyNet for system clones

Full system backups (Pro) never overwrite anything irrecoverably: changed and deleted files are moved to a SafetyNet folder first.
